Diaper smackdown - which do you prefer and why - cloth or disposables?

EcoMoms: Here's one diaper dilemma that never seems to go away - cloth v. disposables. Each have found uncompromising advocates. Which have you chosen and why? Mothering Magazine is all about cloth diapers, as are most lefty-hippy-environmentalists. In fact, today's Portland moms seem to agree that cloth diapers are the "green" choice - even if they're not using them. I recently had a Mom friend apologize for using disposable diapers in a whisper - she felt so guilty about it! But a recent article in the New York Times stated that with today's high-quality disposables (like Seventh Generation's chlorine-free diapers, even the slightly brown color makes you feel like they're better) and in-between options like gDiapers, cloth may not have an advantage. Add to that the fact that Portland only has one diaper service, Tidee Didee, whose operations leave a lot to be desired on the sustainability front (they deliver in gas-chugging vans, use non-recyclable plastic bags, don't have high efficiency washing machines, and who knows about their soap!). So, how are you diapering your baby? |
