Playgroup
Submitted by celina freeman on January 17, 2008 - 9:42am.
Not sure if it's just me but I can't seem to find any a calendar. We are a new family to Portland and really would like to join a playgroup or find some activities. Would someone steer me in the right direction? Thanks! »

Thanks for info
I replied to AKJohns but in case you didn't read that. There is a Baby Loves Disco at the Wonder Ballroom this Sunday. We went to this in Chicago and had a blast. I think we'll try it again here in Portland. You can go to Baby Loves Disco.com for info. Just an idea.
21 month old
I have a 21 month old daughter. Been in Portland less than a year. Am also an older mother with no other siblings or friends with young children. I am free most days, but prefer the afternoon hours, as the playparks always run into nap time for my child. There are indoor playparks at the local community centers - these are cost efficient and give a nice big area to play in - the biggest pitfall is that many of the kids run around unsupervised, so it is really on your shoulders to make sure your child isn't bullied (though much of this is normal toddler behavior - not sharing, etc.). I know there is a playgroup on Fridays at the spirit feather organization, but don't know much about this organization, but worth looking into.
P.S. what is a SAHM?? (from Kristenv)
Activities - see the local pools at the community centers(have toddler swim courses), the art parks at the community centers + lots of different classes - I found several toddler gymnastic courses online in Portland, there are a couple stollerstride type organizations (fitness with toddlers & babies), also some bookstores, coffee shops (the urban grind I think) that have nice play areas for kids (& free coffee on sundays). Also, some excellent restaurants like PB & Ellies that are kid friendly (or parent friendly!)- at Ellies they can even draw with chalk on the walls and they have family entertainment on certain nights. Lastly, the library - they have different age level storytimes and on Tuesday evenings they have family night with bubbles, songs, dancing, and stories - they also have a monthly event, like puppet shows, etc. I also here the OMSCI is the place to go and the Clackamas Towne Center Mall has a new and popular play area for young kids - I hear the early mornings are best, as the afternoons and evenings can be packed here. I found a lot of good information in the local magazine "The Metro Parent". There are farms like Fir Pines Farm that have different types of activities, some year round, like small animal petting zoos etc. The Halloween at Fir Pines was awesome - my baby loved it and she got to run free, see animals, do a maze, slide, walk a huge pumpkin patch, crawl through a house of nuts, run around a wooden two-tiered boat + homemade apple cider doughnuts.
Thanks!
Thanks for all of the info! I am going to look into the Community centers. SAHM is Stay At Home Moms :) I am also available most days. We live in the Pearl District in temporary housing until we find a house to buy. Where area do you live in? We are going to a Baby Loves Disco event this Sunday at the Wonder Ballroom. You might be interested in that for something different to do. We went to a Baby Loves Disco in Chicago and thought it was fun so we'll try it again here. So...are you in a Mom's group now?
Im looking too, I live in
Im looking too, I live in Tigard but am willing to travel. I work from home - I have Wednesdays always open and weekends. My son is one....
I've lived here for several
I've lived here for several years now but I have not been able to find a mom/baby group that isn't 1) for SAHM's only or 2) open to new members. I'm am older mom, so most of my peers either do not have children or have older kids. I have a 6 mos old who does not have any playmates her age---she's the only baby at daycare. I would love to socialize on school holidays (I'm a teacher) or weekends.
